Whistleblower Protection
The Austrian Whistleblower Protection Act (HinweisgeberInnenschutzgesetz – HSchG) implements the EU Whistleblower Protection Directive. The HSchG serves to protect individuals (whistleblowers) who become aware of questionable practices (such as corruption, environmental hazards, etc.) in the course of their professional activities and report or disclose information about them. Whistleblowers must not suffer any disadvantage as a result of making a report.
A whistleblower is a person who has obtained information about legal violations in a current or former professional context and reports or publicly discloses this information. This may include, for example, employees, self-employed people, interns or members of management bodies. The protection also extends to people who support whistleblowers. This includes colleagues as well as family members and acquaintances.
